If Tokyo is Japan's expensive showcase city and Kyoto is its refined-but-pricier cultural capital, Osaka is the value pick โ and it's not close. Same bullet trains, same convenience stores, same quality of public transport, at a noticeably lower daily cost. Locals are also famously more direct and food-obsessed than in Tokyo or Kyoto, which shows up in the prices.

Osaka calls itself "the nation's kitchen" (ๅคฉไธใฎๅฐๆ) and it's not just marketing. Takoyaki (6โ8 pieces) runs $4โ6. A full okonomiyaki dinner is $8โ12. Kushikatsu (fried skewers) at a standing bar is $1โ2 per stick, and you can eat well for $15โ20 total. This is meaningfully cheaper than equivalent quality meals in Tokyo or Kyoto, and it's genuinely some of the best food in the country โ not a budget compromise.
The famous neon canal-side strip (Dotonbori) is touristy and priced accordingly for sit-down restaurants with a view โ expect a 20โ30% markup versus walking two blocks inland. The move locals make: photograph Dotonbori, then eat in Shinsekai or the backstreets of Namba, where the same dishes cost noticeably less.
Osaka's location also saves money indirectly โ it's a genuinely cheap 15โ30 minute train ride to Kyoto, Kobe, and Nara, meaning you can base yourself in Osaka's lower-cost hotels and still day-trip to pricier cities without paying for accommodation there.
