Kyoto Trip Budget 2026: Temple Fees, Ryokan Costs & Daily Spending

Published: July 22, 2026 ยท City budget guide

Kyoto costs money in a different way than Tokyo. Accommodation and food are generally a notch cheaper, but Kyoto is where "temple completionist" syndrome quietly drains your wallet โ€” with 1,600+ temples and shrines in the city, entry fees add up if you don't plan.

Daily budget by travel style

StyleAccommodationFoodTemple/attraction feesTotal/day
Budget$30โ€“45 (guesthouse)$22โ€“30$8โ€“12~$65โ€“90
Mid-range$80โ€“120 (hotel/machiya)$40โ€“55$15โ€“20~$140โ€“195
Luxury$220โ€“450+ (ryokan w/ kaiseki)included/$80+$20โ€“30~$320โ€“560

The ryokan question

A proper ryokan stay with a kaiseki dinner is one of Japan's genuinely unmissable experiences โ€” but it's also where budgets balloon fastest. Expect $250โ€“500+ per person per night for a well-reviewed ryokan in central Kyoto, dinner and breakfast included. The move many travelers make: do 1โ€“2 nights of ryokan splurge bookended by cheaper hotel nights elsewhere in the trip, rather than a full ryokan-every-night itinerary.

Temple fees: how to not overspend

Most major temples charge $3โ€“6 for entry. Fushimi Inari (the famous orange torii gates) is free, which helps. If you're planning to hit 5+ paid sites in a day, a regional day-pass (sold at some train stations) can work out cheaper than paying individually โ€” but for most itineraries (2โ€“3 temples/day), paying as you go is simpler and not meaningfully more expensive.

Where Kyoto beats Tokyo on value

Kyoto's kaiten-zushi (conveyor belt sushi) and small family-run restaurants tend to be both cheaper and less touristy than Tokyo's equivalents. Public buses (rather than trains) cover most of the temple district for a flat ~$2.30 fare, and a one-day bus pass is often the single best transport value in the city.
